With harpoons strapped to their backs, the proud whales of Bathsheba’s pod live for the hunt, fighting in the ongoing war against the world of men. When they attack a ship bobbing on the surface of the Abyss, they expect to find easy prey. Instead, they find the trail of a myth, a monster, perhaps the devil himself…
As their relentless Captain leads the chase, they embark on a final, vengeful hunt, one that will forever change the worlds of both whales and men.
This book was actually my first Patrick Ness book and I REALLY enjoyed it!
This book is very short, I read it in about an hour in one of my classes, and I was completely engrossed in the story. I never knew I’d be so interested in a story about whales but the concept was so interesting to me.
Unfortunately, with the arc, the illustrations weren’t coloured yet, and some were incomplete. I cannot wait until the release to see the finished artwork because what I had in the arc was beautiful itself, so I can only imagine how amazing it will look with colour.
The characters were compelling and interesting, and really drove the action of the narrative. All of both the whale and the human characters had distinct characteristics that made them easily distinguishable from others, and I really appreciated how much personality each character had.
Even if you have never read Moby Dick (I have not) the concept of this book is still incredible. With commentary on societal issues that make you question some aspects of your own life, the depth of the story really strengthens it’s complex narrative and characters, making them even more interesting and realistic (as realist as characters who are whales can be 😂)
Would really recommend, especially to those looking for a short book with a really great atmosphere!
